"You Got A Nerve" 8. "I Was Only Joking" . Rod Stewart rendition of "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want to be Right" is a classic. This is a must have for any Rod Stewart fan! . There are two big radio hits here, but the rest of the LP consists of solid songs. There's "Hot Legs" (which was a concert highlight and which features some great Keith Richards-like guitar riffing) followed by the funky "You're Insane". There's also the great ballad "You're in My Heart", "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want to Be Right" and "You Keep Me Hanging On". Of course, "I Was Only Joking" is one of the finest things Rod recorded in the late 1970s. . The sheer variety of material, along with the high caliber of musicianship among Rod's sessionmen, make this a very entertaining LP that holds up to repeated listenings. . Rod Stewart was an extremely successful and commercial force in mainstream rock music in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Almost anything he recorded before 1990 is ripe for rediscovery and reappraisal, and this LP is an excellent place to start your Rod Stewart collection. . CHART POSITIONS . . “Every Picture Tells a Story” is the 3rd. album by Rod Stewart. It went to No.1 on both the UK and U.S. charts and finished “3rd.” in the Pazz & Jop critics' poll for “Best album of 1971”. . Rod Stewart's “Every Picture Tells a Story” is generally rated as one of the “greatest records” in the history of rock. . In his book, “The Top 100 Rock 'N' Roll Albums of All Time”, Paul Gambaccini listed the album at No.1. . From beginning to end, every song is superb. The title track opens the album with a bang. The song is filled with descriptive and vivid lyrics and Rod Stewart sings it with passion and fury. . It has been an enduring critical success, including a No.172 ranking on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the "500 greatest albums of all time" and inclusion in both "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (2005)" and "1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die (2008)". . The album is a mixture of rock, country, blues, soul, and folk, and includes his breakthrough hit, "Maggie May", co-written by classical guitarist Martin Quittenton, as well as "Reason to Believe", a song from Tim Hardin's debut album of 1966. . The album also included a version of Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right (Mama)" (the first single for Elvis Presley) and a cover of the Bob Dylan song "Tomorrow Is a Long Time", an outtake from Dylan's 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (it would see release on 1971's, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II). . All five members of the Faces (with whom Stewart at that time was lead vocalist) appeared on the album. . It reached the “No.1 position” in both the UK (for six weeks) and the US (four weeks) at the same time that "Maggie May" was topping the singles charts in both territories, making Rod Stewart the first artist to achieve such a feat. It has often been voted among the “best British albums of all time”. . Label: A&M Records – SP-3703 Format: 2×Vinyl (Double LP) Country: USA Released: 1976 Genre: Rock Style: Rock & Roll, Pop Rock . “Frampton Comes Alive!” is a double live album by ‘Peter Frampton’ released in 1976, and one of the “best-selling live albums” in the United States.
“Frampton Comes Alive!” was a breakthrough for the artist.
Released on January 6, 1976, it debuted on the charts at 191. The album reached “No.1” on the Billboard 200 the week ending April 10, 1976, and was in the “top spot” for a total of “10 weeks”.
It was the “best-selling album” of 1976, selling “over 6 million” copies in the U.S. and became one of the best-selling live albums to date.
“Frampton Comes Alive!” was voted "Album of the year" in the 1976 Rolling Stone readers poll. It stayed on the chart for “97 weeks” and was still No.14 on Billboard's 1977 year-end album chart.
The most recognizable songs from the album are "Show Me the Way", "Baby, I Love Your Way", and "Do You Feel Like We Do", all of which were released as singles, and continue to receive much airplay on “classic rock” radio stations. . Track Listing:

Frampton returned from touring in 1976 to record this album. Stevie Wonder is also featured.
“I'm in You” rose to the No.2 slot on the Billboard album charts, whose keyboard driven, dominated by the sound of the opening bars Baldwin Piano, ARP String Synthesizer-generated string section, Moog synthesizer, rather than a Guitar, and eventually involves a Gibson Les Paul, and Acoustic Guitar, played by Frampton, it was clear that Frampton was exploring new sides of his music.
The title track became his most successful single yet, and the album and same-titled single reached platinum and No.2, respectively.
The song "Rocky's Hot Club" was a novelty song written about Frampton's dog Rocky, who lay across his lap as he wrote the song. On the track Frampton actually plays harmonica, and guitar, also Stevie Wonder also plays harmonica on. . TRACKLIST:

A1 The Ties That Bind A2 Sherry Darling A3 Jackson Cage A4 Two Hearts A5 Independence Day B1 Hungry Heart B2 Out In The Street B3 Crush On You B4 You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch) B5 I Wanna Marry You B6 The River C1 Point Blank C2 Cadillac Ranch C3 I'm A Rocker C4 Fade Away C5 Stolen Car D1 Ramrod D2 The Price You Pay D3 Drive All Night D4 Wreck On The Highway
. “The River” is the 5th. studio album (a double album) by Bruce Springsteen, released in 1980.
Despite the acclaim accorded “Born to Run” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town”, this is the album that broke Springsteen into the big leagues, thanks to "Hungry Heart", then his most pointedly commercial song; it had new fans swooning but some old ones grumbling for the "poetic" Springsteen of days gone by.
Not to worry - though more economical lyrically, “The River” had something to offer nearly everyone: There's old-time frat rock ("Sherry Darling"), empathetic character studies ("The River", "Stolen Car," "Independence Day"), passionate rockers ("Out in the Street"), dramatic ballads ("Point Blank"), and even a couple of good-natured goofs ("Cadillac Ranch", "Crush on You," "Ramrod").
A sprawling double-disc set, “The River” offers proof that Springsteen could do it all and could do it better than virtually anyone else.
“The River” has the mood, the emotion, the range. Bruce Springsteen is like the Beatles or Dylan; it's almost impossible to say which album is his best. If I had to choose one album that defined the man, that summed up to everything he stood for, that captured all of his hopes and beliefs, this would be the one. Springsteen is a great storyteller, and “The River” could be his most powerful tale.. .

.
Label: Dunhill – DSX-50099 Format: Vinyl, Compilation Country: USA Released: 1971 Genre: Rock Style: Hard Rock, Classic Rock
Startling to listen again to this album. I mean, 1971 is not exactly yesterday. But they remain fresh, musically creative and intricate - as great to listen to now as they ever were.
They remind us of what “true rock” was, how original, and how sad it is that today's pop cannot offer what the great groups of the past - and ‘Steppenwolf’ is way up there.
“Steppenwolf GOLD” is a first-class magic carpet ride. . TRACKLIST:
A1 Born To Be Wild A2 It's Never Too Late A3 Rock Me A4 Hey Lawdy Mama A5 Move Over A6 Who Needs Ya B1 Magic Carpet Ride B2 The Pusher B3 Sookie, Sookie B4 Jupiter's Child B5 Screaming Night Hog
.
“Gold: Their Great Hits” was the first greatest hits collection released by Canadian rock band ‘Steppenwolf’.
The album, released in 1971, charted at No.24 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts. The album certified "Gold" by the RIAA on April 12, 1971.
In its review, ‘All Music’ praises the production and engineering as "stellar" and characterizes the album as "an amazing period piece" that is "nearly perfect" "as an introduction to a great band."
‘Steppenwolf’ have become synonymous with their huge Harley ridin'-hit, "Born to be Wild", though in reality, their success was far broader, with sales totaling over “25 million” units worldwide.
Their history is littered with a succession of band members, substance abuse issues and several break-ups and reformations, but ‘Steppenwolf’ endures to the present day.

7. Richie Blackmore RAINBOW - Bent Out Of Shape — RM65 . Label: Polydor, Mercury – 815 305-1 M-1 Country: USA Released: 1983 Genre: Hard Rock Style: Heavy Metal, AOR (album oriented rock)
. TRACKLIST: . A1 Stranded A2 Can't Let You Go A3 Fool For The Night A4 Fire Dance A5 Anybody There B1 Desperate Heart B2 Street Of Dreams B3 Drinking With The Devil B4 Snowman B5 Make Your Movedouble LP re-issue in a gatefold sleeve. Half speed mastered at RTI by Stan Ricker. . Again a good album by ‘Rainbow’. Rainbow was formed by ‘Deep Purple’ axeman Richie Blackmore in 1975, and the band is sometime refered to as ‘Richie Blackmore's Rainbow’. . “Bent out of Shape” was the 7th studio album released by Rainbow. It was the last studio album released by “Rainbow” before Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover took part in the ‘Deep Purple’ reformation. . This album is generally referred to in reviews as a commercial effort by the band, attempting to repeat the success of the song "Stone Cold" and the album “Straight Between the Eyes”. . This is a very classy hard rock album. If you are interested in checking out Rainbow beyond the Dio years - start here. Joe Lynn Turner may have been commercial and a pretty-boy, but he had the huge rock pipes to back it up. Also, the songwriting is excellent here - this album is full of hummable melodies and memorable hooks. Ritchie plays some smokin' guitar on a couple of eerie instrumentals, and there is a dark, gothic atmosphere throughout the entire album. . "Desperate Heart" is good, melodic 80s pop metal, featuring a frantic, over-the-top guitar solo that ranks as one of Blackmore's best. . "Street of Dreams" is a masterpiece, a moody song full of melody, great vocals from Turner and a killer chorus. One of the band's classics. If Rainbow could've stayed together and written more tunes like this, it would've ultimately been preferable to the damp squib the Purple reunion ended up being. . “Bent out of Shape” is one of the best albums from the Joe Lynn Turner era and is one of the best albums due to their superb songs. . A must for fans of classic style hard rock! . .
. . . . 8. The Alan Parsons Project - Turn Of A Friendly Card — RM55 .
.
Label: Arista – AL 9518 Country: USA Released: 1980 Genre: Electronic, Pop, Rock Style: Synth-pop, Symphonic Rock, Progressive rock . The Alan Parsons Project's “The Turn Of A Friendly Card”, their 1980 observation of the world of gambling, is an outstanding progressive-pop album, and one of the group's very best works. In fact, I'd probably park this album right behind “Tales Of Mystery & Imagination” as the group's greatest album. The music composed by Parsons & Eric Woolfson is simply stunning, the arrangements lush & breathtaking, the performances powerful. . ‘The Alan Parsons Project’ was a British progressive rock band, active between 1975 and 1990, consisting of singer Eric Woolfson and keyboardist Alan Parsons surrounded by a varying number of session musicians.
Behind the revolving lineup and the regular sidemen, the true core of the Project was the duo of Parsons and Woolfson. Woolfson was a lawyer by profession, but also a composer and pianist. Parsons was a successful producer and accomplished engineer. Almost all songs on the band's albums are credited to ‘Woolfson/Parsons’.
“The Turn Of A Friendly Card” is a progressive rock album by ‘The Alan Parsons Project’, released in 1980.
The album is also notable for spawning the moderate hits "Games People Play" and "Time", the latter of which was Eric Woolfson's first lead vocal appearance.
With two of the Project's best songs, the lovely ballad "Time" and the wavy-sounding "Games People Play", “The Turn Of A Friendly Card” remains one of this group's “most enjoyable albums”.
On "Games People Play", vocalist Lenny Zakatek sounds compelling and focused. With "Time", it is Eric Woolfson who carries this luxurious-sounding ode to life's passing to a place above and beyond any of this band's other slower material.
The last track, "The Turn of a Friendly Card", which is broken into five separate parts. "Snake Eyes", sung by Chris Rainbow, is the most compelling of the 5-pieces, and ties together the whole of the recording.
As in every ‘Parsons’ album, an instrumental is included, in this case an interesting number aptly titled "The Gold Bug". Like most of the band's instrumentals, its flow and rhythm simulate the overall tempo and concept of the album, acting as a welcome interlude. . “The Turn Of A Friendly Card” stands toe to toe with the best efforts Pink Floyd ever put forth. The range of styles, tempos, and moods are as diverse as those on The Floyd's most successful album “Dark Side of the Moon”, but that should come as no surprise considering Parsons's substantial involvement in recording and engineering that masterpiece.
“The Turn Of A Friendly Card” is to the point and doesn't let down. Not to be missed! . “The Turn Of A Friendly Card” is a glowing gem from Alan Parsons & company, one of their finest. Getting this album is one gamble you can definitely bet on. . TRACKLIST:

CHARTS: Year - Chart - Position 1977 - The Billboard 200 - No. 9 1977 - UK Albums Chart - No. 30 1977 - Canada - No. 11 . REVIEW / Professional Rating: ‘Allmusic’ rated this album 4 1/2 stars out of 5-stars. . “I Robot” is a progressive rock album recorded by ‘The Alan Parsons Project’, engineered by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson in 1977.
The second of former Beatles/Pink Floyd engineer Parsons's long string of progressive-rock concept albums was also his commercial breakthrough, spawning an unlikely but catchy hit in "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You".
In addition to that tune are other ‘Project’ faves such as "Breakdown", "Don't Let It Show", and "Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)". . The ambitiously elaborate 1977 album -according to the liner notes, a meditation on "the rise of the machine and the decline of man" - boasts the sonic wizardry and immaculate musicianship that would become the Project's trademark through the '80s, and features an array of guest vocalists, including Hollies frontman Allan Clarke and Cockney Rebel leader Steve Harley.
“I Robot” has been a staple in the playlists of stereo shops around the globe since its release in 1977. You could always count on an ‘Alan Parsons’ album when you wanted to test a stereo system. ‘Parsons’ is a true master of the studio, and to many, this album was (and still is) his finest hour.
This album has strong influences from soul, funk and disco music, especially in tracks like "I Robot", "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You" and "The Voice", mixed with some influences from early electro and synth-pop music. It also sounds very close to Pink Floyd's “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Animals” albums, with a more commercial pop oriented sound.
Three singles were released from this album: "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You", "Don't Let it Show" and "Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)". The track "Breakdown" went into heavy rotation on AOR (Album Oriented Rock) stations and continues to be played on classic rock radio.
"Don't Let It Show" was covered by Pat Benatar for her “In the Heat of the Night” LP album. . This albums would apeal to those who love the classic melodic rock such as The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Barclay James Harvest, E.L.O., or latter day-Beatles. In my opinion Alan Parsons has never released a bad album. The production, as you would expect, is pristine throughout. Eventhough this album was recorded in the mid-70's, it still sounds extremely full-bodied and clear on LP. . Come on music lovers! Hear what a real artist can do in the recording studio, pick up “I Robot”, you won't regret it! This version is well worth purchasing even if you have various other versions of the album. And if you haven't purchased it, if you like progressive rock, this album is one of the best. . . . . 10. The Alan Parsons Project - Eve — RM55 . Label: Arista – AL 9504 Country: US Released: 1979 Genre: Electronic, Rock Style: Pop Rock, Synth-pop, Experimental, Ambient, Progressive Rock . TRACKLIST: All tracks written by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson.
A1 Lucifer A2 You Lie Down With Dogs A3 I'd Rather Be A Man A4 You Won't Be There A5 Winding Me Up B1 Damned If I Do B2 Don't Hold Back B3 Secret Garden B4 If I Could Change Your Mind . “Eve” is a progressive rock album by ‘The Alan Parsons Project’, released in 1979.
Eve’s focus is a woman and her effect on men, and it is notable as the only ‘Project’ album to feature female lead vocalists (Clare Torry and Lesley Duncan). Alan had worked with Clare on Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”.
On this album, the opening instrumental "Lucifer" was a major hit in Europe and the poppy "Damned If I Do" reached the US Top 30. . CHARTS: Year - Chart - Position
1979 - UK Albums Chart - No.74 1979 - The Billboard 200 - No.13 1979 - Canada - No.10 1979 - Germany - No.1 1979 - Austria - No.2 . This is one of Mr. Parson's best… musically brilliant. The melodic content and lyrics are top notch, and if one looks deep into this collection, you'll see an almost mournful reflection on the state of women. . "Lucifer" is a fine instrumental opening, typical of Parsons ability to make repetition interesting. "You Lie Down with Dogs" is a marvelously satiric look at what happens when you "lower" yourself to perhaps indulge in a little friskiness outside the norm. . "I'd Rather Be a Man" is no more than an ode to the redneck, and works quite well. "Winding Me Up" is bouncy, infectious and harmless. "Damned If I Do" is one of my favorite Parsons songs - the soaring string arrangement amidst the quasi-rock feel work well in conveying the feeling that you are damned if you do, damned if you don't… . "Don't Hold Back" is one of those lovely Parsons ballads that uses the female voice to remind men that we wouldn't be well off without the fairer species; and "If I could Change Your Mind" is another winner, a lush and lovely vocalization that surreally wraps up the collection.
‘The Alan Parsons Project’ was known for making concept albums and this one was one of the clearest and best accomplished of them. I wouldn't rank it in the same league with “The Dark Side of the Moon” as far as concept albums go, but it stands on its own very well.

“Pyramid” is a progressive rock album by ‘The Alan Parsons Project’. It was released in 1978. It is a concept album centered on the pyramids of Giza. At the time the album was conceived, interest in pyramid power and Tutankhamun was widespread in the US and the UK. “Pyramid” was nominated for the 1978 Grammy Award for “Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical”.
“Pyramid” is nothing short of a masterpiece.
This is just one of those albums with a perfect "flow", where every track just blends together to create a complete musical picture of the artist. But the songs on “Pyramid” will also stand up well on their own. Tracks like "What Goes Up", "Shadow of a Lonely Man", "Can't Take it With You", and "One More River" will stick with you long after the album has finished playing. "The Eagle Will Rise Again" - with its lush production and light airy vocals from The Zombies' Colin Blunstone - is certainly one of Parsons finest moments ever. I would rate “Pyramid” right alongside Parsons finest works, such as “Gaudi”, “Eye In the Sky”, “Try Anything Once” and “On Air”.
There are not as many straight-out "rock-n-roll" songs here as you would find on most other Parsons albums, the music on “Pyramid” is definitely a bit more on the "orchestral rock" side, with its occassional string inturledes, and subtle-symphonic accompanyment. I think that this album would have a great appeal to fans of British "art rock" bands like ‘The Moody Blues’ and ‘Barclay James Harvest’, it certainly has many of the same musical strong points. As you would expect from one of rocks most important record producers, this album is sonically (as well as musically) excellent. This is an album not to be missed! Take the "voyage", discover the genius of ‘Alan Parsons’! . .

NOTES: Gatefold sleeve with song lyrics printed inside.
“…And Then There Were Three…” is the 9th studio album by the British band ‘Genesis’ and was released in 1978. It is the band's first album without guitarist Steve Hackett, and the third with Phil Collins on lead vocals, having replaced Peter Gabriel after his departure in 1975.
The album title “…And Then There Were Three…” is a wry reference to the recent departure of guitarist Steve Hackett, reducing Genesis to a trio (which would result in their longest unchanged line-up, which lasted until 1996).
When the departures of original frontman Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis a studio trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, few could have expected the band to climb to greater levels of commercial success. But that's exactly what happened.
Genesis's fanbase increase considerably.
The album reached “No.3” in the UK Albums Chart, and remained in the charts for “32-weeks” having been bolstered by the Top 5 success of "Follow You Follow Me", which also became Genesis's first hit US single.
As a result, “…And Then There Were Three…” reached No.14 on the US chart, becoming their first Gold (eventually Platinum) album there.
Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford had such an incredible working relationship and chemistry together, as Genesis's 1978-1991 output monumentally demonstrates, that Hackett's leaving the group was undoubtedly for the best. This is the start of an unparalled streak of musical brilliance from the Banks-Collins-Rutherford lineup of Genesis. .

Drums, Percussion, Vocals, Backing Vocals - Phil Collins Guitar – Steve Hackett Guitar, Bass – Mike Rutherford Piano, Synthesizer, Organ, Guitar, Backing Vocals – Tony Banks . After Peter Gabriel departed for a solo career, ‘Genesis’ embarked on a long journey to find a replacement, only to wind back around to their drummer, Phil Collins, as a replacement.
“A Trick of the Tail” is the 7th studio album by the rock band ‘Genesis’ and the first to feature Phil Collins as full-time lead vocalist following the departure of original vocalist Peter Gabriel.
“A Trick of the Tail” reached No.3 in the UK, remaining on the charts for “39-weeks”, and No.31 in the US. Additionally, the album was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA in March 1990. Also according to Tony Banks, the album doubled the band's previous albums sales. The 1976 album “A Trick of the Tail” showed Genesis could survive the departure of their charismatic frontman Peter Gabriel, with the now-quartet (Phil, Mike, Tony and Steve) displaying their musical and songwriting prowness on such numbers as the intense opener "Dance On A Volcano", the classical-like "Ripples", the "Kashmir"-ish "Squonk", the wistful epic "Mad Mad Moon" and the closing fusion-ish instrumental "Los Endos". . This album shows Genesis at their zenith of creative brilliance and musical virtuosity and is a slap in the face to anyone who thought that the band was finished after Gabriel decided to leave. Any Genesis fan must own a copy of this album. . The thundering opening track "Dance on a volcano" grabs the audience's attention immediately as Collin's goes on to graciously fill the shoes of Gabriel as lead singer, whilst continuing to demonstrate his ability as a wonderful percussionist, and is complimented by the supreme instrumental brilliance of Banks, Rutherford and Hackett. . Whilst the hauntingly brilliant second track "Entangled" captures the imagination of the listener and provides them with lyrics which they will want to read again and again. After the brilliant "Squonk" comes "Mad Man Moon" which is another example of the truly amazing gift Banks posses as a song writer. This is perhaps the best song on the album. . Then the brilliant and light hearted "Robbery Assault and Battery" sets the audience up for the truly beautiful "Ripples" which is about an old women looking in a mirror and seeing herself when she was young and beautiful. The title track is excellent from the start to the finish and is yet another example of Banks at his best. The album is then finished by the brilliant instrumental "Los Endos" which is a song that the audience can only marvel at and once finished, set their turntable or CD player to play track one again. . This is not only my favourite Genesis album but is also perhaps the best album I possess in my vinyl LP and CD collection. Fans of the earlier material should own this album because it is truly the best piece of progressive rock the band have produced whilst fans of the later years will also love it's musical brilliance and perhaps slightly more commercial edge. This album shows Genesis at equilibrium between their earlier and later material and feeds off both eras to produce a piece of musical excellence. A must own! . 14. Dire Straits - Dire Straits — RM55

. . . Label: Columbia – PC 33484 Country: US Released: 1975 Genre: Rock, Jazz Style: Blues Rock, Classic Rock
‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ (also known as ‘BS&T’) is an American Jazz-Rock group, formed in 1967 in New York City.
Since its beginnings in 1967, the band has gone through numerous iterations with varying personnel and has encompassed a multitude of musical styles. What the band is most known for, from its start, is the fusing of rock, blues, pop music, horn arrangements, and jazz improvisation into a hybrid that came to be known as “jazz-rock”.
Unlike “jazz fusion” bands, which tend toward virtuostic displays of instrumental facility and some experimentation with electric instruments, the songs of ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ merged the stylings of rock, pop and R&B/soul music with big band, while also adding elements of 20th Century “Classical” and “small combo jazz traditions”.
“New City” is an album by the band ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’, released in 1975. It peaked at No.47 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts.
“New City” marks the return to the line-up of lead vocalist David Clayton-Thomas.
On the album cover it says “Blood, Sweat & Tears featuring David Clayton-Thomas”, to let people know that now it's the same band that made all those hits a few years ago. It's the first ‘BS&T’ album in many years to get favourable reviews. Live bookings began to increase in quality and quantity, and the band experienced renewed popularity.
Their revival of the Beatles "Got To Get You Into My Life" peaked at US No.62, and the album hit No.47.

The 7x platinum follow-up “Double Vision” (1978) proved to be their best-selling album and established their credentials as arena-filling rockers.

Every song is good, and the LP as a whole represents some remarkable work by a very talented group. All in all, this is an incredible album.
Along with “The Chicago Transit Authority” album, “Chicago” or “Chicago II” represents early Chicago at its “very best”, seven very good musicians playing a jazzy mix of horn-influenced rock and roll. In later years Chicago became known for producing popular "power ballads," but early Chicago, with Terry Kath's driving guitar, was very much a rock & roll band. . . . . . . . . . . . 19. The title track "Hot Streets" is one of Chicago's all-time best recorded songs. It is the best tune of the bunch. It has a very nice jazzy arrangement and nice vocal from Robert Lamm who wrote it. Other highlights include "No Tell Lover" and "Gone Long Gone", two melodic gems from vocalist Peter Cetera.
"Alive Again" and "Little Miss Lovin'" are the standouts.
The remaining tracks are also solid, but the album's most standout piece is "No Tell Lover" which boasts a gorgeous melody and one of James Pankow's best brass arrangements in years. The song really does sound like a warm summer afternoon in the park.
“Hot Streets” is still an important release from the legendary band as it shows the group in a critical time of transition, successfully surviving a death in the family. The people that replaced him did a wonderful effort in continuing the Chicago style of music. GREAT ALBUM!!
The album is essential for anyone interested in the group's history and legacy. “Hot Streets” is a fine release from Chicago and a worthwhile purchase.

“Cheap Trick at Budokan” is a live album released by an American rock-band ‘Cheap Trick’ and their best-selling recording.
It was ranked No.430 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of “the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” in 2003. The band was also ranked No.25 in VH1's list of the “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock”.
When ‘Cheap Trick’ went to Japan to tour the country for the first time in April 1978, they were received with a frenzy reminiscent of Beatlemania. They have often been referred to in the Japanese press as the "American Beatles".
During this tour, ‘Cheap Trick’ recorded two concerts attended by their loyal 12,000 screaming Japanese fans nearly drowing out the band at times at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. Ten tracks taken from both shows were compiled and released as a live album titled “Cheap Trick at Budokan”, which was intended to be exclusive to Japan. Demand for the import album became so great that Epic Records finally released the album in the US in 1979.
“Cheap Trick at Budokan” launched the band into international stardom, and the album went triple-Platinum in the US.
In the US, the album peaked at No.4 on the Billboard 200 and became the group's best selling album with over 3-million copies sold. It also ranked No.13 on Billboard's Top Pop Albums of 1979 year-end chart.
The single "I Want You to Want Me" reached No.7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Cheap Trick at Budokan” was certified triple-Platinum in 1986 by the RIAA.
In Canada, it went to No.1, hitting the top of the RPM 100 Albums chart on August 11 of the same year. By November 1979, it had achieved quintuple platinum status (5,000,000 units sold) in that country. . . TRACKLIST:

It is the band's most commercially successful studio album, going to No.6 on the Billboard 200 and being certified Platinum (1-million copies sold) within a few months of its release.
The album's title track "Dream Police" remains a marvel of pop-rock perfection, and became a Top 30 hit for the band. "Voices" was also a hit for the band, reaching No.32 on the Billboard chart.
There are a number of songs that rank among Cheap Trick's finest, particularly the title track, the epic rocker "Gonna Raise Hell", the tough "I Know What I Want", the simple pop of "Voices", and the closer, "Need Your Love".

It was/is simply the FINEST rock album from the 80's or anytime for that matter - PERIOD! I am a Hendrix, Zappa, Crimson, Yes, Genesis freak (you know the type) :-] but I've gotta tell you THIS record is what rock was all about.
"You (Got It)" is a classic soft guitar ballad full of passionate energy. Can you imagine playing this live for a few friends at a party?!
The song "Every Time I Think Of You" on this album is particularly outstanding.
"I Was One" is another great song with a powerful sound, especially in the harmonious intro riff that sounds like a rockified version of the intro to "I'll Be There" (Jackson 5/Mariah Carey).
“Head First” is one the the best straight forward rock tunes ever. I rank it in my top ten of all time. I love this recording! Waite sound perfect and the rest of the boys simply nail it. This is great driving music.
The rest of the album has a rich appealing '80s style rock sound similar to Journey, Nelson, or Styx, with acoustic guitars mixed with electric guitars, harmony electric guitar lines, high vocals with harmonies, and strings.
.....every song an absolute gem. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30. Alice Cooper - Greatest Hits — RM65 . . . . . . . . . . . . “Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits” Label: Warner Bros. Records – BSK 3107 Country: USA Released: 1974 Genre: Rock Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal . .
“Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits” album by ‘Alice Cooper’ features the hit singles of songs from their 3rd. album “Love It to Death” to the last album with the band's original lineup.
In addition to classic “hard rock” anthems like "I'm Eighteen", "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and "School's Out", Cooper unleashed rollicking barroom rockers like "Under My Wheels" and tugged at the heartstrings with cuts like "Desperado" and "Hello Hooray."
In retrospect, his songs have more in common with the ‘Who’ than with ‘Black Sabbath’ or ‘Judas Priest’.
But his songs were filled with soaring choruses and grandiose horn embellishes that proved he could be larger than life both on and off the stage.
Alice had the voice and wit as sharp as a razor, but could sing as soulful as a choir.
Sure all of the Alice Cooper Band's hits are here, "School's Out", "Eighteen", "Billion Dollar Babies", "Muscle of Love", "No More Mr. Nice Guy", etc. and all of those songs are excellent.
Can't argue with the greatness of what's here.
These songs represent the height of Alice Cooper's career. After this album came out, Alice Cooper (the singer) left the band that was named after him. . .

Critically acclaimed by almost every rock critic alive, the album shot up into the Top 10 and became one of the big sellers of the year.
One can instantly feel the driving power in the voice of Joe Cocker. Tunes like "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" and "Delta Lady" are bare bones late 1960's hard rock done to perfection.
The album also has a soul and gospel feel that is unmatched by any white classic rocker of that generation. He ranks up there with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, as one of the great performers of the 60s.
The gospel choir sound on "Darling Be Home Soon", "Hello Little Friend" and "Hitchcock Railway" are simply phenominal.
This album has several versions of Beatles songs that tear the great originals to shreds, as well as a couple of exceptional versions of Leon Russell compositions, and a rendition of the Lovin' Spoonful's "Darling Be Home Soon" that blows the original away any time you hear the two back-to-back.
His painful and emotional version of George Harrison's "Something" turns the Beatle classic into his own musical statement. Simply superb!
In the liner notes it states that Eric Clapton while listening to the finished product told the album producer, Cordell: "Oh man, this is a hit, this is a real hit".
Indeed it was a hit, and the finest studio album Joe Cocker has ever put out.

"What A Fool Believes" was a huge hit, and with its crisp beat, rich & soaring harmonies, clever and incisive love lyrics, and the extreme melodic catchiness, it's a total “classic” - there's no denying the brilliance of it.
The jazzy, arrestingly hushed and moody title track "Minute By Minute" is also a “classic” hit. "Open Your Eyes", with its pleading minor-keyed verses and extreme catchiness, is also a “gem”.
The greatness doesn't stop there, with enthusiastic bluesy rocker "Don't Stop To Watch The Wheels", an irresistible song with a super fun guitar line.
Every song itself on the album is a “classic”. This is ‘The Doobie Brothers’ at their very best, and they will never top this moment in their recording history.

"China Grove" & "Long Train Runnin'" received strong FM radio station airplay and later "Without You" became another hit. The album included other gems such as the beautiful "Ukiah", "South City Midnight Lady", "Clear As The Driven Snow", "Natural Thing" & "Evil Woman".
"Dark Eyed Cajun Woman" was a very bluesy track and a tribute to the blues and ‘B.B. King’. Jeff Baxter of ‘Steely Dan’ played pedal steel guitar on the track "South City Midnight Lady". He would become an official ‘Doobie Brother’ in 1974.
The 2nd side of the album opens with the rocker "Without You". This song, like many others had begun as a jam. "That song had both drummers playing at the same time," Johnston stated. "It was kind of a tribute to THE WHO."
There was absolutely no filler on this album it was that good. The band's sophmore effort “Toulouse Street” released a year earlier was good but “The Captain and Me” far surpassed that in terms of songwriting and musicianship.

You might describe “Birds of Fire” as ‘rock-jazz fusion’ genre.
This album is recommended to all rock music fans, particularly if you're a fan of ‘Hendrix’ or ‘King Crimson’. Progressive-rock fans will probably love it, and they may find it to fall closer to that category than it does pure jazz.
This band may have helped broaden the appreciation of jazz to younger audience, while also blowing the minds of many with their own dazzling musicianship.
It's difficult to describe in words just how groundbreaking and unique was the music made by this band. You just need to listen to it and then you'll understand.
Led by guitar virtuoso John McLaughlin, the ‘Mahavishnu Orchestra’ specialized in blending rock with elements of jazz, Eastern, R&B, classical, country & other elements to form an indescribable brand of music. Their music was complex and technical, yet it could be very addictive and utterly inviting… with pure power of sound at its best. Crank it up & enjoy! . . TRACKLIST:

The basic band on all tracks was Barnstorm, composed of ‘Joe Walsh’ on lead guitar and synthesizer, Joe Vitale on drums, flute, synthesizer and backing vocals, and Kenny Passarelli on bass. “Red Octopus” is a 1975 album by ‘Jefferson Starship’. It is a superb collection of rock songs by a ‘veteran’ American rock group’ that never sounded tighter or more well-oiled in their career.
It was the “best-selling album” by any incarnation of ‘Jefferson Airplane’ and its spin-off groups, and the single "Miracles" hit “No.3” on the Billboard charts, being the biggest hit single the band had until that point. The album itself “Red Octopus” hit “No.1” on the US chart.
This is really an excellent album: it is a pleasing collection of songs. It is not heavy duty rock, nor heavy duty adult oriented rock à la Fleetwood Mac. It is a very 70s album. Every song is different and a good tune. The playing is good - sometimes exquisite - Craig Chaquico's guitar solo rhythm on "Ai Garimasu" are superb - Pete Sears's John Entwistle-like bass lines is excellent!
It has everything - lounge lizard songs (Miracles) rockers (I want to see another world) instrumentals (Sandalphon) and middle of the road numbers. As a result it makes the album successful. Well recorded too - it deserved its success in 1975-76 and it stands up well today.

This album is more in the Blues and R&B mode. "Love-itus" is an exception, it rocks!
It's got blues and ballads where everything swings, like "Think It Over". The band is at some of it's tightest, and even gets downright dirty on songs like "Mean Love" or "Love-itis" and it has some raw meat on it like "Be Careful What You Do", which is about how the protagonist has eyes all over town watching his cheating lady friend.
They do a great take on Curtis Mayfield's "Believe In Me". Peter Wolf's vocal shine on this album.
The rest of the record will grow on you. It's an excellent album. . . . . . . .

Label: ABC Records – AB-989 Country: USA Released: 1977 Genre: Folk, Rock Style: Country Rock, Pop Rock (same as ‘The Eagles’) . ‘Poco’ rose from the ashes of ‘Buffalo Springfield’ in the late 1960s when Richie Furay, Jim Messina and Rusty Young decided to form a new band. The band enjoyed several placings in the Top 20.
‘Poco’ was the 1st. great country rock band, or the 2nd. (I can’t recall whether ‘The Flying Burrito Brothers’ beat them to the punch or not). However both lost the race to the top of the charts to ‘The Eagles’, who came later.
‘Poco’ was a great band, combining good songwriting, stellar playing, harmonies, and a beat you could dance to.
‘Poco’ started creating that very special West Coast mix of country, folk and rock that later bands like ‘The Eagles’ got rich on.
“Indian Summer” is the 12th. album by the Country rock band ‘Poco’, released in 1977. This was the band's last studio album before both Timothy B. Schmit and George Grantham left the group to join ‘The Eagles’.
This is probably their very finest album. If you are a ‘Poco’ fan or a fan of ‘The Eagles’ then this album is a must-have.
Excellent. Highly recommended for anyone who is after a good music. Something really worth listening to.

. . Gone is the country flavor replaced with more high energy guitar work and tempo on "Twenty Years", "Living In The Band" and "Downfall". "Indian Summer" immediately whisks you to a memerable cool Autumn evening in the warmth of of a wonderful relationship.
Paul Cotton's guitar solo sweeps you off your feet and shoots you out into the starry night! Two tracks by Timothy B. Schmit, "Me And You" and "Find Out In Time" are true ‘Poco’ classics with his rich vocals and great harmonies.
The final cut' "The Dance", which rocks out with superb guitar work and harmonies. . . . . . . . . . 42. Poco - Crazy Eyes — RM45 . Label: Epic – KE 32354 Country: US Released: 1973 Genre: Country Rock Style: Classic Rock . . “Crazy Eyes” is the 6th. album by the country rock band ‘Poco’. It is Poco's very best album - straight up! . TRACKLIST:
A1 Blue Water A2 Fools Gold A3 Here We Go Again A4 Brass Buttons A5 A Right Along B1 Crazy Eyes B2 Magnolia B3 Let's Dance Tonight . The 1973 classic “Crazy Eyes” was founding member Richie Furay's last album with ‘Poco’, who contributed two songs: "Crazy Eyes" and the closing track, "Let's Dance Tonight."
But while his mood is somewhat somber on both songs, the other four bandmembers harmonize superbly, play as well as ever (especially the amazingly versatile Rusty Young), and otherwise seem not at all bothered by the impending split. Standout tracks include "Here We Go Again", Tim Schmit's look at ill fated, symbiotic romance; Paul Cotton's environmentally cryptic "Blue Water", and Young's "Fool's Gold", which is rivaled in quality among Poco's legendary "Rocky Mountain Breakdown".
And as usual, Cotton ably carries the responsibility of showcasing some no-frills western-style rock with "A Right Along", as well as doing ballad honors on J.J.Cale's lush, languid "Magnolia".
‘Poco’, even though they produced several excellent albums after “Crazy Eyes”, was never really the same group after Furay left. Songs like "Let's Dance Tonight" and the panoramic title tune cement Furay's irreplaceable value as the band's best "chemist" when it came to consistently pleasing the tastebuds of country-rock fans who came of age in the 1970s. All things being equal, if you've only heard of ‘Poco’ but never actually HEARD them, this is definitely the LP to start with.
The quality of the songs and arrangements is absolutely “top class”. If you do not own this record, go out and get it. You will not be disappointed. A true gem. . .

. “Legend” is the 13th. album by the Country rock band ‘Poco’, released in 1978. The album became successful - "Crazy Love" and "Heart of the Night" written and sung by Young and Cotton respectively, become the group's two biggest hits to date.
Though ‘Poco’ never matched ‘The Eagles’ for number of hit songs, as this album proves, they were capable of putting out powerful, catchy radio worthy music.
"Crazy Love" hit me like a brick. Judging by how high the song charted, I'm sure I wasn't the only one. Who can't relate to the simple, efficient lyrics that say so much, so beautifully. To me this song is flawless from beginning to end and is one of my all time favorite songs, period. But other spellbinding songs are, "Spellbound" and "Love Comes, Love Goes" both equally potent in delivering heartfelt emotions. "Heart of the Night" and "Little Darlin" are well produced tunes that caught radio play, as this was Poco's most polished sounding recording.
"Legend", the bands best selling album that resulted in two Top-20 songs, "Crazy Love" and "Heart Of The Night", the upbeat "Barbados", and several beautifully cascading ballads with "The Last Goodbye", "Spellbound", and "Love Comes Love Goes" as absolute standouts. The gritty, thumping title track ends this album as one of their best songs ever.
"Legend" sounds as good today as it did then. Simply timeless.
The kind of music you never grow tired of. There was a lot of good music recorded during the 70's. This album ranks right up there with the best. . . . . 44. Joe Vitale - Roller Coaster Weekend — RM45 . .
.
Label: Atlantic – SD 18114 Country: US Released: 1974 Genre: Rock Style: Classic Rock
One of the best drummer's albums ever!
‘Joe Vitale’ is an American musician primarily known as a drummer but also a flautist, keyboardist and singer. He has played with many of the top names in music during a career dating back to the 1970s.
He has worked on albums by Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joe Walsh (he was Joe Walsh's right hand man), The Eagles and numerous Eagle members solo projects.
‘Joe Vitale’ was a key member of Joe Walsh's Barnstorm band, and had a lot of input on Walsh's albums, as he heavily influenced the music and overall sound of Walsh's 70's albums. This guy was very talented and capable of standing on his own, and this is a very good solo LP from ‘Joe Vitale’. . TRACKLIST:
A1 Roller Coaster Weekend A2 (Do You Feel Like) Movin' A3 Mad Man A4 Take A Chance On Love A5 School Yard B1 Shoot 'Em Up B2 Feeling's Gone Away B3 Two Of Us B4 Falling B5 Interlude B6 Step On You
.
Here ‘Vitale’ writes all the tunes, performs all the singing and backing vocals, and plays all instruments bar the guitar, for which he sensibly brings in the maestros ‘Rick Derringer’ and ‘Joe Walsh’.
What was outstanding about this “classic” album was the quality and consistency of the music composition. There may have been no Top-20 single here, but there were plenty of candidates, and not a single dud track. Every track has a point to it. You could play both sides of the LP in less than 35 minutes, try to sing along, and have an entirely enjoyable experience.
The multi-talented ‘Vitale’ sings, plays drums, flute, keyboards and other assorted instruments in top form on this album. Songs like "Feeling's Gone Away" and "Falling" should have become FM staples.
This is just a brilliant album. Fans of melodic pop-rock will not be disappointed. Well worth the ride!

‘Styx’ was a hugely popular & influential American progressive rock band whose multi-platinum albums of the 1970s and 1980s propelled several Top 10 singles into the Billboard charts. The band is known for melding the style of progressive-rock with the power of hard rock guitar, strong ballads and elements of American musical theater.
The band is best known for the hit songs "Lady" (No.6, 1975), "Come Sail Away" (No.8, 1977), "Babe" (No.1, 1979), "The Best of Times" (No.3, 1981), "Too Much Time On My Hands" (No.9, 1981) & "Mr. Roboto" (No.3, 1983). Other hits by the band include "Show Me the Way" (No.3, 1990), "Don't Let It End" (No.6, 1983) & "Renegade" (No.16, 1978)
The band has 4 consecutive albums certified multi-Platinum by the R.I.A.A.
“Cornerstone” was Styx's follow-up to their 2nd. consecutive Top 10 selling Triple-Platinum album in a row, 1978's “Pieces of Eight”. Cornerstone became Styx's 1st. US Top 5 album peaking at No.2 on the Billboard album chart and is currently sitting at Double-Platinum according to the RIAA although A&M said it went Triple-Platinum (3 million copies sold in US)
Styx's lead vocals, Dennis DeYoung had two ballads on the album. The first was the album's first single and Styx's only US No.1 single "Babe" which Dennis wrote for his wife Suzanne.
“Cornerstone” is Styx at their most accessible & melodic. The strength of Cornerstone is clearly the ballads. This is the 1st. album I ever listened to with my first girlfriend and it holds a special spot in my heart. But that is not the only reason I am giving this album 5 stars. It is a masterpiece and should be taught in colleges on how to write Ballads. The songs have feeling and emotion. Styx could make ballads and rock n roll songs, and 'Cornerstone' proves it. This record features many great tunes besides 'Babe'. The whole record is great.
ONE OF STYX BEST ALBUMS . A must for fans of classic style progressive rock! . .

. A GREAT UNKNOWN TREASURE!
One of the best unknown or forgotten groups of the 60's. If you like ‘Jefferson Airplane’ you'll love ‘Sweetwater’.
‘Sweetwater’ was a rock band originally from Los Angeles. They were the act scheduled to play first at the “Woodstock Festival” in 1969, although due to problems within the band, solo folksinger Richie Havens became the first performer. ‘Sweetwater’ performed next, becoming the 1st. band to play the festival.
‘Sweetwater’ were early developers of the psychedelic rock/fusion style that was popularized by ‘Jefferson Airplane’ to be regarded as the archetype "60s Sound".
The band was in between recording albums when lead singer Nancy Nevins suffered a terrible car accident in late 1969 that permanently damaged one of her vocal chords. Nevertheless, the band pressed on, laying down new material and salvaging some previously recorded tracks with Nevins, who also recorded two new songs during her rehabilitation. Where her absence really hurt them was on the road, where the band was booked solid; on record, they didn’t miss a beat.
In 1999, the story of the band was depicted in a VH1 TV-movie called “Sweetwater: A True Rock Story”. . TRACKLIST:

Goose Creek Symphony's “Words Of Ernest” is a must-have for fans of country-rock. They sound nothing like The Eagles or The Flying Burrito Brothers or West or even The Byrds. When approaching ‘Goose Creek Symphony’ you have think more in terms of the Americana sound of The Band but with a much more communal hippie vibe. The lead singer, Charles Gearheart, shares the same southern twang as Levon Helm and these Arizona musicians sound like they actually did live together in some old farmhouse, just smoking pot and playing music all day long.
Second album by the American country-rock band. A perfect mix of country, folk with a dash of rock. How ‘Goose Creek Symphony’ mixes saxaphone with the fiddle is fantastic. It's fun music to listen to. This laid back music, was soothing.
This is one of those that you can just start at Track 1 and listen to all the way through without wanting to skip any tracks. There is not a clunker on the disc - it ranges from good to great. This is the most fiddle oriented of their releases.
If you have any interest in the merger of country and rock/pop that occured in the early '70's get this. Great Music! Highly recommended.. . . . . . . . . 48. . . CHART POSITIONS : Year - Chart - Position 1974 - Billboard Pop albums - No.11 . . . ‘The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band’ was one of those “supergroup” creations of the 70's.
. “The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band” is the debut (1st.) album by ‘The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band’. It went all the way to peak at No.11 on the Billboard 200 chart. . ‘The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band’ was a country rock “supergroup” led by singer-songwriters Richie Furay (‘Buffalo Springfield’, ‘Poco’), Chris Hillman (‘The Byrds’, ‘The Flying Burrito Brothers’, ‘Manassas’), and J.D. Souther (‘Longbranch Pennywhistle’, noted songwriter for ‘Linda Ronstadt’ and ‘The Eagles’). . Hillman brought three other former members of ‘Manassas’ to the group: pianist Paul Harris and percussionist Joe Lala, both of whom had also worked with Joe Walsh's ‘Barnstorm’ band; and pedal steel guitarist Al Perkins, who had also played with the ‘Flying Burrito Brothers’. The group was rounded out by session drummer Jim Gordon. . What can you say about an album that has more history in country rock. You have the founding father of ‘Buffalo Springfiled’ and ‘Poco’ in Richie Furay. You have a founding father of the ‘Byrds’ and a perenial back up for everyone including Stephen Stills and the ‘Burrito Brothers’ in Chris Hillman, and you have a solid songwriter who helped form the ‘Eagles’ in J.D.Souther. Add on the talents of Al Perkins on pedal steel, and Jim Gordon who's background included Eric Claptons Deric and the Dominos, and you can imagine how incredible this album is. . Setting aside the level of professionalism in its execution and delivery, we can look at the quality in song writing. Each song writer has tremedous experience, and placed on the table three or four of their best for this album. J.D.Souther presents his classic ballad style in his numbers, Richie Furay presents his signature work, and Chris Hillman throws in his solid rock based compositions. (But then, what else can you expect from a bass player with his portfolio.) . This album is “A-1”, and should not be overlooked. . The band was formed in 1973 upon the request of David Geffen, head of Asylum Records. The group had a substantial hit with the 1974 self-titled first album, which was certified “Gold”, and the single "Fallin' in Love" reached No.27 in the U.S. . |
