We don't really have a bad word to say about the DVD-1940. It's packed with features, offers kick-ass performance and its build quality is a cut above most budget players. If we're being picky, cheaper universal players like the Pioneer DV-600V add a USB port for less money, but judged on its own merit, the DVD-1940 is a sensational DVD player that earns our wholehearted recommendation.

There are more changes under the bonnet, with the player using an advanced Faroudja DCDi chipset and 12-bit video. Like the 1930 it upscales up to 1080p over HDMI, and outputs multichannel audio via digital coaxial or six-channel analogue.

With the 1930 already the class-leader in video output, kudos to Denon for improving the picture even further. Edges are sharper still, allowing for an improved depth of field. Colours look clean and vivid, while skin-tones are rendered superbly naturally.

Performance
As you'd expect for a dedicated DVD player, the Denon's performance in standard definition was outstanding. Colours, while not as vivid as we've seen with some players, were true and the better for it - even in tricky shadow areas. There were no green discolourations or colour stepping ^^ video performance was simply superb no matter the movie choice.

For example, slip one of our trusty reference disks in - King Kong - and simultaneous detailed images and lack of noise were astounding. The long-shot of Kong on top of the Empire State Building in Chapter 38 proved to be one of the cleanest renditions we've seen.
