My vinyl is very… “very happy”! I am comparing it to one of my Ortofon ‘Cadenzas’ which is a US$2,500.00 (RM7,500.00) cartridge and I tell you the “ DL 304” is pretty sweet!! Now the “ DL 304” is part of my collection. You cannot go wrong with this one. Remember it is 0.18 mV… a low output Moving Coil MC cartridge. Very ‘NICE’!! . Denon DL-304 Denon DL-304 vs AT-OC9ML/II vs Linn Klyde by Celadus » 03 Aug 2008 After my bad experience with the Linn Klyde cartridge (especially its poor tracking ability, but also for rolled off High Frequency and a too much “fat” bass) I’ve lived 6 months with an AudioTechnica AT-OC9ML / II which tracked much better and solved this way my first concern about the Klyde and vinyl reproduction. . AT sound is on the cold side of neutrality, its bass is tuneful and articulate but not very deep, at least in my setup: Linn LP-12/Cirkus/Trampolin/Valhalla, Ekos arm and Linto phono stage (fixed at 150Ohm), Naim Nait 5i-2 and Accuphase E-307 integrated amplifiers, ProAc Studio 140 and Harbeth C7-ES2 speakers.
Knowing that tracking ability can be solved without a Linn cartridge, I’ve wondered if another low output MC cartridge exist to reach an overall better sound without spending a lot of money. . The contenders compatible with my Ekos and Linn to under 1,000 Euros were: .
- DENON DL-304 - DENON DL-S1 (not imported in Italy)
- DYNAVECTOR DV-20XL
- BENZ MICRO Glider 2
- GOLDRING Elite .
Being the Denon DL-304 the cheapest I’ve made an easy decision and ordered it. . I’m really impressed by the sound of the DL-304, at this price it’s better than the AT in my setup, the price of the Linn cartridge is crazy at 1,100 Euro. .
Compared to the AT, tracking ability is similar i.e. no problems at all, but the sound is warmer and sweeter without High Frequency rolling off or lost of dynamic, more details are rendered in a natural way and the bass is deeper. Soundstage is also better, the speakers disappears more easily, instruments and players are more 3D, more real presence, ambient sounds are also more easily discerned. . Compared to the Klye tracking ability is much better, High Frequency are restored and the bass is more articulate and detailed. The Klyde seems at first to have more bass power, but it’s a fat bass without good transparency or articulation, with the DL-304 you can listen to deep bass details that were masked by the Klyde. Linn cartridge seems like an old tube amp with rolled off HF, loose bass, poor detail and bigger voices from singers: I think this is the reason some people like the Klyde, but IMO it’s a Low-Fi reproduction. The deep bass difference is more easily discerned with bigger speakers like the Studio 140 than with the C7. . Soundstage and details are much more easily rendered with the Denon DL-304 and surface noise or record damage sounds are completely separated from music, contrary to Klyde which seems to mix together music signal and noise thus degrading the listening experience. The AT is in the middle of these two in that department and closer to the 304. .
The 304 is all I wanted the Klyde to be at 1/3 of the price. . The 304 tracked perfectly at 1.2 gr and is very sensible to alignment, small changes to VTA, VTF or antiskating force. So fine tuning with your ears is very easy to reach the optimum. .
It can be mounted with 4 bolts so its low weight can be increased for better arm compatibility and greater stiffness. Just don’t use the bolts included which are of poor quality, can’t be tighten a lot and are lighter than usual: get some stainless steel M2.5x20mm Allen bolts, they need to be long because the body is taller than usual. . I don’t know if any of you have done a comparison between the 304 and the cartridges listed above, I would like to ear someone else experience. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Now I don’t know if it’s the cartridge or another component of my setup the weakest link.
I like the 304 so much that I could live with it forever.. . . . . . . Please view our other items to see many more leading brands of quality Hi-Fi for sale. .
