Up for sale is this very beautiful condition the legendary  Linn Sondek LP12 Transcription Turntable — they are stunning! — and across the board stellar performance. Belonged to one old British guy (a grandfather) from Oxford, England.
The turntable is in fully working order, been in storage for 20 years, and has been used only a handful of times before storage, it still has the original cartridge/stylus. Supplied with mat & lid.
It was purchased in the late 1970s. Serial No. 037872.

Unit is in immaculate condition for its age (pictures above) with all original specifications. Rare 70's model in exceptionally fine condition. Truly an exceptional turntable.

There's not much to be said about the Linn Sondek LP12 that hasn't been said a thousand times before — it is quite simply an iconic piece of high end hi-fi with a sound quality matched by others but never surpassed.

If you really want to build a solid system for listening, you need to get a proper turntable (not audiophile junk) and expand your vinyl collection. Treat your music the way good music oughta be treated.

Make sure though if you wish a true transparent un-coloured sound that you construct from the source up. Large flash speakers are all very well but you are only projecting what the source gives you. Start with the best turntable cartridge you can afford, then the arm, deck, amplifier with a good phono stage and lastly the speakers… I have heard systems with relatively inexpensive speakers outperform systems with large impressive ‘name’ speakers due to the mismatch in a system…

I've been an audiophile for over 20 years now and I can safely say you should spend the most on your source, be it a CD player or Turntable, they are 80% of the sound. Always get the best source possible. I state this without reservation. I could easily say "Garbage In", "Garbage Out" and leave it at that. However, a better source will improve all aspects of your music from your high frequencies to pace, rhythm and timing (PRAT) to bass tautness and slam. Contrary to 70's ideology, a better source will actually increase the sense of realism and slam more so than a bigger amp.

A sufficient amp should be neutral and let the speaker do its thing. The classic Audiolab 8000A amplifier is hard to beat as a starting point… great phono pre… and they are relatively affordable. Speaker wise the EPOS ES11 is a good match with the Audiolab 8000A… a little more modern Quad 11L bookshelf speakers mounted on good stands also match the Audiolab 8000A well and the Harbeth Compact 7ES3.

The debate over whether records sound better than CDs  has been gone over time and time again. Any person who listens to records will tell you that they think vinyl sounds better, in large part because it is analog rather than digital. I honestly prefer the vinyl version better; the pressing process adds a sonic character to the music. This is my preference.

Vinyl is totally a different format, it’s like the newspaper. Sure, I could read it online, but there is something about holding the paper, it’s the smell and the feel of it in your hands that make the experience something else. It’s the ritual of removing the vinyl from it’s sleeve, placing it on the turntable and hearing the initial static that makes the experience for me. It almost makes the music more important, something to be paid attention and appreciated in a different way. We’ll always have iPods and car stereos for casual music consumption, but I like to think of having a hi-fi system as a totally different activity.
I do love the ritual of playing vinyl…and there are recordings, old and new, that exist in no other format. There have been moments when listening to a good record on a great set of hi-fi system has given me chills… It is what I hope music sounds like in Heaven.

Forget MP3′s … as the source all-together. You can run your iPod through your amp, it will sound great, but it will only go so far. CDs sound clear and wide, but they cannot reproduce the sound of vinyl. The difference between a 180-gram record and a CD — even an SACD — on a good system is very, very noticeable. Once you hear it you won’t go back, and you’ll join the rest of the vinyl junkies and their dedication at the black altar! …

Enter the Linn Sondek LP12, which apparently sounds incredible connected to the right gear and I can guarantee that you’ve never heard analog sound like this before and — as you can see from the photos above — is absolutely gorgeous — with the walnut finish (light brown colour). This is not like what you normally see sold by our friend Loy Hi Fi (i.e. taken from Malaysian or Singaporean owner) as this turntable was especially brought in from England. Just look at the pictures you can already know its true condition—just beautiful!

…all in search of that perfect sound. Eventually, I found it — I am using a fully updated Linn all along even till today. I have owned many other brands (turntable) but I will always go back to Linn because I felt that there is always something missing... with other brands.

Full working order and comes fitted with the Linn BASIK LV X tonearm and Linn K 9 MM phono cartridge worth Ł109 UK Pound or over RM500.00 when new, both in excellent condition.
This is the original Linn K 9 "yellow-bellied" MM cartridge. The K 9 did have a yellow stylus assembly originally. Later, this was changed to grey colour like the K 5. I don't know why, and it's audio trivia really. Maybe the yellow was chosen as it was the same as the Basik's stylus assembly, perhaps to emphasise that K 9 was a "super Basik" cartridge. Of course, it had a metal body as well as the vital elliptical tip, where as the lower range K 5 was plastic-bodied and much closer to the Audio-Technica AT95E.

The K 9 used an expensive solid "shank" diamond rod of very high quality.
The K 9 has a true parabolic cut and polish.

Linn Basik LV X
.
Basik LV X, a straight black tonearm with removable headshell and calibrated tracking force and bias controls, is solid and well engineered and as a result many Linn Sondek 'kaki' (enthusiasts) are still looking for it. The Linn Basik LV X tonearm was in production until 1986 as a quality entry level arm below the level of the company's flagship Ittok model. The fine tonearm completes the Linn Sondek LP12, therefore the price stay high after all these years.

Valhalla single speed (33 1/3 rpm) crystal-driven electronic Power Supply for the Linn LP-12 Sondek turntable.

The sophisticated Valhalla power supply is a well designed circuit board suitable for 230V or 120V use, and creates a perfect 50Hz sinewave (well two, at 90ş to each other) at 110V (well, more like 85-90V) to drive an AC synchronous motor at a steady 33.3 RPM.

This is an early model and still very original (Rare item! Classic!) - no upgrades since it's orignal purchase. It is original as from the makers — no PSU upgrades, no suspension mods, no bearing upgrades, etc., hence you will get to hear the original "Linn sound" which has made them famous worldwide since the mid 70's.

Many Linn enthusiasts say the early LP12 model sounds much better than their newer model which according to them the later has "loss" much of the original "Linn sound".
It works and sounds flawless (at least to my very fussy audiophile ears!).

This beautiful condition Linn Sondek LP12 is in the classic Afromosia Wood finish. This example is in excellent condition. You will see from the photographs that the deck appears to be entirely original and is in exceptional condition for its age. The smoked lid (dust cover) appears to be an original item, without cracks or obvious damage that I can see. There are a couple of small scratches on the lid (dust cover) due to normal cleaning which I have tried to capture in the photographs.

This LP12 is one of the best vintage of LP12 in my opinion (I’ve seen many!).
It is ideal for the person wishing to start a serious hifi system at moderate cost, in which case the deck can be gradually upgraded should you desire.
Alternatively, this Sondek would be of particular interest to the collector interested in retro hifi.
"In 1972, Ivor Tiefenbrun, the founder of Linn Products, first demonstrated the Sondek LP12 turntable; and, if you excuse the pun, it started a revolution.
Prior to the Sondek LP12, conventional thinking was that the loudspeakers were the most important element of a hi-fi system. Ivor and the Sondek LP12 turned this completely around and proved that it was the other end of the hi-fi chain, the turntable, that was most significant. After all, loudspeakers can only reproduce the signal that is fed to them. So if the power amplifier and pre-amplifier degrade the signal and lose some of the audio information, and the turntable does so too, then not even the best loudspeakers in the world can bring that music back. On the other hand, if the turntable extracts the maximum information from a record that it can, if a little of that audio signal is lost further along the path then even average loudspeakers can still produce excellent results. Extracting the maximum information from a record is what the Sondek LP12 has been doing for more than thirty-five years, making it the longest-lived hi-fi product still in production anywhere in the world, and the benchmark by which all other turntables are judged.

Taken from the introduction to the Linn Sondek LP12 User Manual, this concisely explains the revolution in thinking which transformed the British HiFi industry in the 1970's. The conventional mantra that the loudspeaker was the key component in the chain was turned on its head in favour of the signal source, be it a Turntable or CD Player, and extensive listening tests eventually confirmed the unarguable logic of "rubbish in - rubbish out".
