The story is tragic. Marianne Walenska is a young polish refugee suffering from post-war trauma of the Second World War. The horrific atrocities inflicted upon her and her family by the Germans keep haunting her. She is still struggling in dealing with the past trying to bury her pains within her. Marianne meets CharlesRolfe. Later, as their relationship grows, marriage of convenience is agreed on. Charles Rolfe is a distinguished war hero who has just been declared fit, after four years of continuous medical treatment. However, he is left impotent. Their relationship based on companionship is something of a psychological and emotional relief for both, as they protect each other and keep company. Without revealing the ending of the plot, Mask of Paradise is full of tragedy and suffering, hatred and love, and revenge and friendship… all the elements that make the novel a compulsive reading as the story holds the reader in suspense all the way.
