A superb example of what must be the best value stereo speaker Naim has ever made, in excellent condition.

As many of you know, this SBL floorstanding tower is well sought after by audiophiles and Naimophiles in general and betters the newer current models.  If you don't fall into these two categories, chances are you've never heard of the Naim SBLs.

Naim SBL (Separated Box Loudspeaker) was designed featuring three different cabinets stacked one above the other. From top to bottom, the first one was the tweeter enclosure, the second was the woofer enclosure and the third one acted as an acoustic resistance chamber for the woofer load.


This is a fantastic legendary stereo speaker which punches well above its weight for clarity, power and timing.  They are very detailed - they need a quality amplifier and source to get the best from them - although are not difficult speakers to drive.

If you’re looking at this auction, I guess you know how Great the SBL is.

The SBL loudspeaker has ceased production. Its closest equivalent in the current Naim range in terms of size would be the Allae, but it is arguably close to the sound quality of the SL2.  The SL2s sell for close to £6000 or RM30,000.00, this makes SBLs a complete bargain at current second-hand prices.

When Naim ceased making the SBL in 2002, it retailed at around £2,500 or RM12,500.00 in the U.K.

RRP New Retail Price in Malaysia was around RM17,000.00.

THE SBL INSIDE ( Separated Box Loudspeaker ) . . The SBL is quite a complicated speaker. The idea is to allow more bass in as little speaker as possible.    Usually to achieve large amounts of bass a large cabinet and large cone is required. The SBL is by no means a tiny speaker but it is smaller than your average floor stander.   In essence the bass speaker is allowed maximum efficiency by way of the bottom box. Energy from the rear of the speaker cones travels through a control device into the bottom box.    The tweeter sits in its own box to avoid any detriment from the bass speaker. . The mid box containing the bass speaker sits on a metal frame which extends to the floor. The bottom box is de-coupled as far as possible from the middle box, and the middle box is given the rigidity of the entire metal frame of the SBL, which actually passes through the bottom box. . Its a marvellous design, overly complicated by most speaker standards and probably where it gets a lot of its myth for complex setup from. . The mid and bottom box should really couple only at four points, four spikes which are attached to the metal frame. A popular misconception is that the coupling is with the silicon that bonds the two. This is untrue the silicone should not in anyway support the mid box, thats the job of the spikes. . SBLs were designed to fire outwards though, they were not designed for toeing in. And regarding rear wall placement, get them as close as you can. . . .         The SBL comes with a completely separated cross-over unit for each speaker.  You could put the external passive cross-over next to your amplifier and "bi-wire" them (your house will look like a power station with Naim cable), or use the active cross-over and two stereo power amps or monoblocks. .       . . . The key to this SBL speaker's superior performance lies in the ‘clarity’ and ‘detail’. . . . Now sit back and enjoy! . .       . . .          _gsrx_vers_301 (GS 5.3.1 (301))
