Try pressing the shutter button of the E-P3, and you'll find that the image comes into focus much faster than you've ever experienced before. Almost instantly, in fact. The E-P3 achieves the world's fastest*1 autofocusing speed, making sure you never miss the moment that moves your heart. To obtain that extraordinary AF speed, we reviewed and redesigned everything related to the AF system in both the camera and lens. The result is an autofocus system that works about three times faster than previously, capturing the scene as it is when you shoot it, and not a few seconds later after the moment is gone. In addition, because the new 12.3-megapixel High Speed Live MOS sensor has been improved to offer higher speed and higher sensitivity, quickly turning that captured moment into a clear, sharp image, which is then reproduced with high fidelity by the newly developed TruePic VI image processing engine which boasts significant enhancements in image quality and speed. With the E-P3's instant response, you don't have to hope for a good picture, you can be sure of it.
Fast AF System*2 achieves world's highest speed
In the E-P3 AF system, the Live MOS sensor is driven at double the previous speed (120 fps), allowing the image signals required for AF to be obtained very quickly. The speed of the AF computations that generate the contrast signal from the image signal in order to determine the degree of focusing has also been increased. The synergy with the MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism in the lens makes it possible to increase the AF speed by about three times. Together these improvements have made possible the AF at the world's fastest speed.
Versatile AF functions increase your photographic comfort zone
The 35-area AF has 35 focus selection areas, compared to 11 points on previous models, enabling detailed, pinpoint AF across a wider area than before. Other functions for improving AF versatility include the "group area AF", which selects an area composed of 3 x 3 points from the 35 points to capture a fast-moving subject accurately, as well as the "fulltime AF function", which keeps the Live View image focused even when the release button is not pressed, enabling quick tracking of a moving subject.
New 12.3-megapixel Live MOS Sensor
The E-P3 incorporates a new 12.3-megapixel High Speed Live MOS sensor that is a high-sensitivity, high-speed version of the E-P3itional Live MOS sensor. The sensor is also compatible 1920 x 1080/59.94i full HD-format movie recording. The use of the line addition method for readout of lines in movies and Live View images improves image reproduction. Maximum sensitivity has also been boosted to as high as ISO12800, which can improve shooting under low light, indoors or using a faster shutter speed.
New image processing engine supporting high image quality and fast response
The E-P3 incorporates the new TruePic VI image processing engine to improve image quality and quicken response. In addition to using the same Fine Detail processing that provided the E-5 with such high resolution, the E-P3 incorporates Real Color Technology to improve the reproduction and gradation expressions of specific colors, so that they appear more natural and closer to the way the actually look to the human eye. Dedicated image processing cores are used separately for the recorded image and Live View image to improve the response in sequential shooting.
OPERATION
New touchscreen panel makes operation more intuitive and comfortable
Wouldn't it be great if SLRs were as easy to use as conventional point-and-shoot cameras? That's one of the things that makes PEN cameras so special. To make shooting as easy and intuitive as possible, the E-P3 incorporates a large 3.0-inch OLED monitor with a touchscreen panel. With touchscreen control, as well as button and dial control, it has never been easier to get the camera to do what you want it to do, when you want it to do it. The camera can be controlled as desired when selecting the position to be focused or when looking at a picture with several other people. The large OLED display's wide color gamut and high definition reproduces extraordinarily vivid images with brilliant, realistic colors. Image reproduction is further enhance by a gapless structure design that suppresses optical reflections and an anti-fingerprint coating to ensure that you can easily view the images on-screen, whether you're outside in the bright sunlight or indoors in a dimly illuminated room. Thanks to our ongoing pursuit usability and visibility, the E-P3 will fit your hand like a glove from the moment you first pick it up.
Live Guide for easy background defocusing
The Live Guide interface helps you quickly achieve sophisticated photographic and artistic effects. Techniques possible only with SLRs, such as background focusing, can be controlled intuitively while observing the Live View. With the E-P3, the Live Guide can be activated from any of the P/A/S/M modes as well as from the iAUTO mode like previous cameras. Control using the touchscreen is also possible, and smooth function setting using the traditional Live Control with two dials is also possible.
Good-looking, sophisticated user interface
The E-P3's user interface has been completely redesigned. The font and graphics used in the menus have been enhanced to offer improved visibility and quality. With the newly provided Menu Guide, when a menu item is selected, the camera enters the explanation display mode, popping up an explanation of each menu item whenever it is changed. This display is a big help for the user because the user can find out what each function is used for and how it is used without the instruction manual. The Menu Guide can be switched ON/OFF with the INFO button.
Built-in flash
A flash is built into the camera body for quick, easy flash shooting. The flash includes a commander function so it can interlock with externally installed wireless flashes, enabling wireless multi-flash shooting. Now anyone can take advantage of sophisticated flash-shooting techniques that were once the sole domain of professionals and advanced users.
Tone control
When the INFO button is pressed during exposure correction, the newly added tone control function makes it possible to adjust the brightness of the bright and dark sections of image individually. This function makes it easy to take pictures with a taste of tight black or various expressions such as intentional saturation of the bright area of picture.
Detachable customizable grip
You can replace the grip on the E-P3 to suit your own taste or shooting style. For instance, the optional large-sized grip (MCG-2) makes it easier to hold the camera when you need to keep a firm grip, such as when using a telephoto lens.
ART FILTER
Ten Art Filters
Designed for those who are not satisfied with simply capturing reality, but who also want to enjoy artistic expressions with their cameras, The Art Filters has made another progress. The E-P3 incorporates all of the ten Art Filters available for the present. In addition, Variations for the Pale & Light Color filter and two additional Art Effects including the Starlight and White Edge effects are provided to expand the range of expressions. Intuitive combination of the effect with an Art Filter will help you finish your pictures into a work of art.
POP ART (I / II)
This filter enhances colors impressively to turn a scene in daily life into a pop, or kitschy world. It even reproduces the atmosphere of the subject brightly and joyfully to finish the picture in a pop art style.

DIORAMA
This filter turns the real world in front of the camera into a world of toys. A rapid variation in the focus confuses the feeling of distance to create a surreal miniature world.
CROSS PROCESS
This filter creates an unrealistic atmosphere with unexpected color development and conversion. It makes it possible to enjoy an accidental fun that is completely different from capturing the image as you see it with high fidelity.
GENTLE SEPIA
This filter provides any scene with a sepia tone with rich gradations. The soft expression in overall is accentuated by tight shadows to render a graceful style with a quiet atmosphere.
DRAMATIC TONE
This filter provides a daily landscape with a dramatic impression. It applies local changes in contrast to the image to represent the real space in a fictitious style by creating unrealistic tones of light and darkness.
Art Effects
This function adds various composition effects to Art Filters and has been expanded to five effects with the addition of the Starlight effect and White Edge effect. These effects provide everyone with the opportunity to utilize exciting new creative expressions in both still images and movies.

Art Filter Bracketing
This function generates multiple pictures with different Art Filters with a single shot, making it possible to experiment with several different photographic effects at the same time and explore new variations that you may not have though of before. In addition to the Art Filters, this function can also be used to select multiple picture modes including Vivid, Natural, Muted and Portrait.

Full HD movie
To make the most of its SLR image quality when recording movies, the E-P3 can record full HD movies in the super-high-quality AVCHD. For easy and convenient playback and editing on a computer or web uploading, the E-P3 can also record HD movies in the AVI Motion JPEG format. Further assurance of quality is provided by the multimotion-compatible movie IS system, which stabilizes the slow shake produced when shooting while walking. You'll also be able to take full advantage of the E-P3's collection of Art Filters to express your creative vision. High-quality stereo audio can be recorded in either the Dolby Digital format (AVCHD recording) or the linear PCM format (AVI Motion JPEG recording). Movies can be viewed on your TV and controlled by your TV's remote by connecting a commercially available HDMI mini-cable.
* Image stabilization in the movie mode is electronic so slightly enlarged images are recorded.
* IS may not be effective if the camera is shaken excessively.
* When an Art Filter is used, the frame rate, the recorded audio and the availability of Art Effects vary according to the movie format and the Art Filter in use. The frame rate is 2 fps with the AVCHD format.
* Only a TV compliant with the HDMI-CES standard can be used. Some operations may be limited with certain TV.

Built-in image stabilization
Though small, the image stabilization mechanism built into the camera offers remarkably high performance. And, because the IS mechanism is incorporated in the camera, it works with any lens you mount on the camera. Operating automatically as required, this high-precision IS mechanism lets you shoot with confidence even under low light or when using a telephoto lens.
Accessory Port 2
The E-P3 may be small, but it is designed to serve as the core of a powerful photographic system. An accessory port on the back of the camera lets you connect a variety of accessories including an electronic viewfinder, external stereo microphones and a macro arm light, as well as the OLYMPUS PENPAL PP-1 - a communication unit that makes it easy to transfer images to a smartphone.
Face and Eye detection AF/Tracking AF
Sophisticated and accurate, the face and eye detection AF function lets you prioritize nearer eye, left-side eye or right-side eye to capture sharp, detailed expressions in portrait shooting. When not required, you can switch it off. For accurate autofocusing of moving subjects, the tracking AF function employs an advanced new detection algorithm that uses the chroma data and face detection data, as well as the luminance signal to improve the accuracy of tracking. In addition, an AF illuminator is provided to support autofocusing in low light.
e-Portrait
The e-Portrait scene mode enhances the appearance of your subject by making the skin appear brighter and smoother. When this mode is set before shooting, the camera automatically saves the image both with and without correction*. It is also possible to apply the same effect in the post-shooting edit mode so that you can take the best shot and make it even better.
* The corrected image is saved only in 2560 x 1920 pixels.
* This function may be ineffective with certain subjects.
i-ENHANCE
The iAUTO function that automatically selects the optimum mode when the camera is pointed at the subject now includes the "i-ENHANCE" picture mode, which is capable of evoking a "being-there" feeling with vivid colors. The i-ENHANCE mode is set automatically when the iAUTO function is selected, and the camera determines the optimum color and contrast conditions so that the subject is imaged prominently.
Multi-Aspect
You can select different aspect ratios for your pictures to suit different requirements or creative goals. Five aspect ratios are available including the standard 4:3, 16:9 for impressive, cinematic-style images, 6:6, which has a square screen like a medium-format camera, 3:2, which is identical to 35 mm film cameras, and 3:4, which makes it possible to capture a vertical composition image without rotating the camera. Using unusual aspect ratios will lead you to encounters with fresh expressions.
3D Photo Shooting
A 3D Photo function has been added to the scene modes. After you take the first shot in this mode, you simply position the camera following the guide and take the second shot. The images are combined and recorded as a 3D file (MPO format). The recorded 3D image can be played on a 3D-compatible PC or TV. You can also apply Art Filters* to your 3D pictures to create truly original and impressive images.
* The Starlight effect cannot be applied.
* 3D pictures can be viewed on a 3D-compatible PC or TV by playing them back on the camera via an HDMI connection or USB connection, or by playing them back on an SD card.
One-push digital teleconverter
The one-push digital teleconverter function can be allocated to the Fn 2 button so you can shoot a 2X telephoto image at the push of the button. Image interpolation performed by the TruePic VI image processor magnifies the captured image by 2X with digital processing while maintaining the number of pixels. When you use it in combination with the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6R lens, you'll be able to capture amazing super telephoto pictures with a focal length of 600mm (35mm camera equivalent).
Multi-Exposure
This function makes it easy to experiment and create your own amazing images by superimposing two images while checking the final result on the Live View display. An image previously saved as RAW data is used as the basis and displayed semi-transparently on the Live View, while a new image is captured and superimposed. Each multi-exposure can superimpose two frames at a time so repeating the exposures makes it possible to superimpose as many frames as desired.
New slideshow effects
The GPU with 3D graphic display capability also makes it possible to enjoy two types of slideshow. Dazzle your friends and family with an entertaining image display synced with original background music composed by Daishi Dance. It's a great way to relive the fun times you had while shooting, and a great way to share those special times with others.
